CRM JA CharityJamaica Food Security & Climate-Resilient Tree Crop Programme

Trees that feed Westmoreland for forty years.

Hurricane Melissa took the breadfruit, ackee and fruit trees that fed Western Jamaica's small farms. We are replanting them, farm by farm, with the families who own the land — and building the nursery, training and market that keep the harvest coming.

What the programme does

Each enrolled household receives around fifty climate-resilient food trees — breadfruit first, alongside breadnut, ackee, avocado, mango, coconut and cocoa — plus the training to establish them, a producer group to belong to, and a guaranteed floor price at the Savanna-la-Mar aggregation and processing centre.

Phase I — Western Jamaica

1,000 farming households in Westmoreland, Hanover, St James and St Elizabeth. 50,000 trees on about 400 hectares over three years. A central nursery and two satellite nurseries.

Phase II — National

5,000 farmers and 250,000 trees, delivered with RADA and aligned to Jamaica's climate-resilient agriculture programme, with the processing centre running as a farmer-owned business.

Phase III — Caribbean

Replication across CARICOM states that lost tree crops to the same storms, designed with the Caribbean Development Bank.

The land is already secured

CRM Jamaica Group holds leases on two parcels of former sugar land at Shrewsbury, in the Roaring River and Petersfield area of Westmoreland — 35 and 39 acres, leased from SCJ Holdings Limited, the Government of Jamaica's land-management company. These parcels are being transferred to the charity as its founding contribution and will host the central nursery, the demonstration farm and the first commercial plantings.

Progress, in the open

These numbers come straight from this site's sign-up register and are updated every time someone registers. When funding is secured and planting begins, trees planted, survival counts and payments to farmers will be published here too.

How money and trees move

Every dollar has one of four jobs. The charity publishes its budget lines, its audited accounts and the price it pays farmers.

NurseryCertified seedlings propagated at Shrewsbury — 30,000 a year at full capacity.
FarmsSeedlings, mulch, inputs and hands-on training delivered to each registered household. Survival is checked at twelve months and replanted where needed.
Producer groupsFarmers join a group of about fifty that holds input stores, negotiates together and owns a share of the processing centre.
Aggregation & processingThe centre buys at a guaranteed floor price and turns breadfruit into flour, chips and frozen product for hotels, schools, supermarkets and export.

Who selects farmers

Households farming half an acre to five acres with secure tenure or written landholder consent, prioritising farms damaged by Melissa, female-headed households and farmers under 35. Selection is reviewed by a steering committee that includes RADA and a farmer representative.

Who checks the books

Grant funds sit in segregated accounts, audited every year by an independent firm. Any work done by companies connected to the charity's directors is disclosed and approved by the steering committee at arm's length.

What gets measured

Trees planted and surviving, hectares under agroforestry, household food security and income, jobs held by women and young people, and carbon stored — all against baselines taken before planting.
